dangerous design flaw
Stay away, these dumbbells suck. They have a design flaw where the weight adjustment pin gets stuck ALL the time. There's nothing worse than being in the middle of a workout and having to spend 15-20 mins with tools to try and fix an equipment problem. Additionally, even if you are able to get the pin into your desired slot, they may not always grab the weight, meaning the weight plates can fall out when lifted. I've only had these a couple weeks and nearly dropped weights on my toes twice.

I got these because of the low price, but the Bowflex Selecttech 552s I had several years ago were a much better value for not much more money. Because I wouldn't feel right offloading these on someone else (like I said, they're dangerous), I'm going to throw these in the trash and go buy a pair of the Bowflex dumbbells.

Used Them Once, Never Again
I changed the weight successfully a couple of times then somehow I screwed it up pretty badly, I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out how to get it back into some kind of working condition and then I just gave up. Definitely the most difficult and awkward set of adjustable dumbbells I've ever used. I returned them within 2 days.

Update: I got the 52.5 pound Bowflex Adjustables immediately after these. I've had them 11 months and use them about once a week (when I can't make it to the real gym). Changing the weight is easy and fast. I just wish I had more money at the time for the 90 pound bowflexes because chest, back, and french presses are too easy with this weight.
Worth a little extra effort
I've got limited space (and budget) for a full rack of dumbbells, so I went for these instead. I've been using them for years, and they've worked so well I'll never waste all that time and money on going to a gym again. These weights combined with an adjustable incline bench and an exercise bike are all I need for a complete body workout. I also looked at the Bowflex dumbbells, but they were more expensive and quite a bit larger than these, which would bother me.

I think some people who had problems may have given up on these weights a little prematurely (or possibly had defective sets I guess). When I first put mine together they did not work well at all, but I read another review where switching the order of the weights helps. Well, taking about a half hour of trying different combinations did the trick and my weights work fine. Great machine for the price paid
Bought this machine about two weeks back after considerable research. This product is an extreme value at this price point. It is structurally sound and strong. You get a full body workout with this machine much like the ones at professional gyms. But if you are expecting ultra smooth/silent operation, you should probably get one in a (much) higher price range. Yes, the pulleys (all 27 of them) are made of glass fiber (aka plastic) with sealed steel bearings and they do make hissing sound when turned (no squealing sound, at least yet).

If you were looking at the cheaper model, I have to tell you this one is a much better value. This machine is real and lets you do many more exercises. Unlike the cheaper model, it *does not* multiply the resistance at the lower cable. This actually lets you use the lower cable as advertised. Also, there is a third cable that you can pull behind your neck (when seated) for additional exercises like ab crunch.

Great Machine
I bought this machine about 8 months ago and I use it 4 times a week and it has vastly improved my workouts. Its a good machine for a good price, and it adds cable weight training to my workouts, which is awesome. The built in rowing feature, along with the pec dec is awesome. The lat pulldown is great for warming up prior to doing pull ups. The bench press feature is decent, but I would rather use it as a superset after doing a set of free weight bench press. The leg workouts are decent, but not enough to build huge, powerful legs. I recommend this machine for building a powerful upper body. Assembly was pretty easy and straight forward, and takes between 6-8 hours to assemble. All the parts were accounted for and the product is shipped in 5 boxes. One large box for the gym and 4 smaller boxes for the weights. I'm definitely happy with this gym.

Best Functional Trainer for the Price
05/23/12:
I purchased this at Walmart for $499 Plus Tax and Ship to Store. It comes in 5 boxes, 4 for the weights, and one long box for all of the parts to the gym. Its the best one at this price for 2 separate weight stacks. There are 8 12.5 lb weight stacks. I purchased Adler weight adapters to add 2.5lbs or 5lbs so I can raise the weight in parallel with what I use at the gym.

Pros:
-The System is pretty solid overall. It has 2 individual weight stacks that are adjustable. Assembly isn't too bad. You might need another person to hold some things steady, but I got through most of the building in a few hours no problem with a hand here and there.
-The Pull-Up/ Chin-Up Bar is pretty thick. I feel it is either an Olympic Grip or slightly larger which you rarely see on any piece of home gym equipment.
-Takes many attachments. I purchased a Body Solid Press Bar, Gold's Gym Tricep Rope, and Champion Straight Bar; all work no problem. It comes with a good set...

Good machine, but leaves me wanting a little more
Short answer:
This thing would have been 5 stars if the handles were better and there was more weight in smaller increments.

Long answer:
First off, assembly is going to take at least an hour or two and you'll probably need help. That isn't a negative, just a fact...if you want something easier, get a set of dumbbells. If you have to do it by yourself, put the adjustable pulleys on the vertical support before you attach the supports to the base, then you won't have to try to slide them on while holding the whole mess in the air. When bolting the top on, put a little tape on the tip of the hex wrench to hold the bolts while you get them started (you will know when you get to this part...probably right after you drop a bolt in the hole). Also, don't tighten anything until you get the top on, you will need to push/pull things around a little to get holes to line up. This isn't bad construction, just the way it is when you have a lot of heavy-ish metal pieces...
Package and the machine was chewed on by rats
I received the exact product I ordered, but most definitely not in the condition that I was promised. The package was completely destroyed, and looks to be that rats had chewed completely through the packaging and chewed on several weight plates. There was also broken screw heads before even assembling. I personally will never order from this seller again. My delivery date was 9/6/12 and it was not received. Then I was given another delivery date of 9/18/12 and once again was not received. I finally received my package on 9/26/12.

Works as advertised
This is a great product that works as advertised. I mainly got this product for the pull up bar. That worked great and didn't put any marks on the wall. The the hanging pads work good but they take some getting used to. I can do leg lifts with them which really works the abs. The one thing that disappointed me was the shaking bar bell. I saw the video and I still don't get it. Not really effective in my opinion.

In terms of the pull ups though it is great. I could not do 1 pull up when I got the gym. within about 3 weeks I can now do 3 pull ups. The key is I can do it right in my house without having to go to the gym. I work funny hours and at times I am tired and don't feel like going to the gym. The Gold's Gym eliminated my excuses.
Great equipment. Bad extras.
The equipment that comes with this set is great. The meal plan and the DVD are a joke. If you buy this for the equipment and it is still a fair deal. Everything is pretty solid, and they work well together.

Golds Gym Platinum is TOTAL GARBAGE
Bought this machine thinking it was a good quality machine. Buyer beware this is a piece of garbage. The cage is flimsy steel, and if you put on any more than two 45 lb plates on the machine the metal smith bars buckle and make pushing up the weight dangerous as you have to move your body unevenly to guide it back into a parallel position on the smtih rack. If I could get someone to take this piece of garbage back I would. This machine at best is worth about $300 dollars, and the headache to put it together is unbelievable. A few simple upgrades in the components of this machine, like a heavy steel roller bar for the smith carriage, linear bearings and a higher quality of steel would make it worth the money, but none of that comes with this junk.

The lat machine pull down as well is very hard to pull, and requires constant WD 40 on the pulley weight stack just to get it to work. I am yard saling it soon for $200 bucks and spending the extra 1-200 for a real...

golds junk smith rack
I bought this machine thinking that it would be of high quality. It shipped fast . I got it home and spent about 10 hours putting it together. Their were lots of parts to deal with but the instructions wher pretty good so for the most part the biuld wasnt that bad. The quality of this product is bad cheep frame work (dont over tighten the bolts you will crush the tubing). The slide rails for the press bar and the cable system are to small thy bow if you use the machine the way it is desinged for. The pullys bind up hew would make it where all the main pullys ride aginst each other .The peg deck is the same piss pore construction the left side moves decently but the right will pull in but have to push it back to its start position.
I could sit here and type a leter a mile long about the quality issues I have with this machine but dont have all day.
Bottom line I would have exspected more from a name like GOLDS GYM but this is nothing but junk...
Solid Construction, Stellar Performace...
I purchased one of these units last Christmas for my home in SC, where my father and step-mother reside. I ordered it so that I could replace the aging gym that my father had purchased some 20+ years ago. When it arrived in two boxes, I wasn't sure how long it would take to get together, but between my dad, myself and my son, we got it together in about 12-15 hours over a two day period. My 73 year old father was, and is, very pleased with it, as was I, and now I have a new gym to work out when I at home. I was so pleased with it, in fact, that when I returned to my work residence in Virginia, I was looking to order one for the spare-bedroom converted to a gym in my rental house. But for some reason, they appeared to be out of stock or unavailable for about six months. Then about 2 months ago, Amazon informed me that they were in stock and ordered immediately.
